My Soul to Keep

The tears blinded me as I looked into the rearview mirror. My reflection through the haze of mist and pain was that of a red-eyed monster with wild blonde hair. The car forced me to pullover. The door hinge screeched in protest as I pushed the door open. A dirt devil whirled around me and lashed my skin, then disappeared into the sky. My tongue tasted dirt and salt. Anger welled, the monster rose, and I kicked the front tire and beat on the hood with my fists until the skin was red and my bones were bruised. Steam rose in spits and spurts....

Running away from the hand of God, I sprinted the short distance home and held onto my wounds tightly to stop them from bleeding. Finally, I fell onto my porch, the blood oozed between my fingers and onto the planks of wood. The tink, tink sound of blood pouring into metal echoed in my ears and drowned out the chirping of the spring birds. Reaching for the doorknob, my sunbaked skin had become white as snow. The blood had completely disappeared. Now, I’m haunted by illusions and they’re not even illusions of grandeur. With all the strength I...

The miles skidded underneath the car till I stopped at the spot of my dark transformation. The door creaked an old familiar song as I stepped out into the sand. The scenery was a panoramic view of still deep cobalt blue mountains against a light azure sky. A child’s giggle broke the silence as I looked to see a young girl with ash blonde hair running from her father. He caught her, scooped her up in his arms, and hugged her close. The wind whipped blonde strands around my face, and broke my fascination with the bond between father and...

“Hello, Carolina.” His speech had that same perfect vernacular. My name rung in my ears and I almost backed out. My hand was on the doorknob behind me holding on for dear life. Shards of pain radiated from the doorknob poking into the small of my back. “Come here, Carolina, have a seat.” He motioned with his eyes to the empty seat. He hands reached for the table, but only his fingertips touched the edge. Pensively, I sat down, placed my palms upon the table, and looked into the abyss of evil. “You were my favorite one, so far.” He licked his...

The show was over, the balloons had risen, and the landscape was a dull brown with floating toys above us. The surprise was gone, the package opened, but it was a beautiful sight forever burned into memory. We walked back to his motorcycle and I picked up the helmet with duct tape crisscrossed against the visor. “You’ll have to take it off if you want to see.” He got on his motorcycle and revved it up. Guess the   romantic moment just ended.   With all this newfound trust and faith, I decided to put my life in his hands and hooked...

After changing clothes, I went back out and gingerly picked up the rolled up newspaper out of its cavernous hole and unrolled the Albuquerque Journal. Splashed across the headline, in bold, black letters were the words SERIAL KILLER STRIKES AGAIN!   Alisha Myers, thirty-eight, was found murdered in   her Albuquerque, NE Heights home today. Her   boyfriend, Carlos Martinez, who found the body, is   currently being questioned. Police would not speculate   any further details, pending a thorough investigation.  ...

My Dream is Becoming Reality

My dream is becoming reality with every revision I make.  Its scary and exhilarating living having a dream realized.  I can not wait to see my book cover and read the words in black and white.  I have been asked what is it about the dark shadows that I feel compelled to write about.  I have no idea. I have many answers, the dark shadows within us all, and what stops off a mild mannered person from offing our neighbor to begin with.  I am also fascinated with serial killers that can watch someone die and then go have lunch.  What makes them...
